Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is a German 2006 thriller film directed by Tom Tykwer, written by Andrew Birkin, Bernd Eichinger and Tykwer and starring Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Dustin Hoffman. It is based on the 1985 novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind. Set in 18th century France, the film tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Whishaw), an olfactory genius, and his homicidal quest for the perfect scent, it was distributed by DreamWorks Pictures in the United States and Canadian distribution, Constantin Film in Germany and Austria, Nordisk Film in Scandinavia, West Video in Russia, Hoyts Distribution (now StudioCanal) in Australia & New Zealand, Medusa Distribuzione in Italy, Pathé! in the United Kingdom and Ireland distribution, Metropolitan Filmexport in France and Filmax in Spain.
